马来西亚人力资源部正式宣布2016年马来西亚最低薪金制度（PGM2016），决定自2016年7月1日起调高东、西马最低基本薪资规定；其中西马半岛员工每月最低基本薪资，由原先900马币提高至1,000马币；东马砂劳越州及沙巴州则由原先800马币，提高至920马币，以保障劳工获得合理薪资。前述最低基本薪资规定适用於所有领域，但家庭女佣除外。
随着2016年最低薪金通令的生效，2012年最低薪金通令（PGM 2012）和国家薪金咨询理事会在2012年9月6日发出的指南都会被废除。 因此，针对试用期员工，此前2012年最低薪金通令中有关延期申请、重组僱员薪金的谈判及减少最低薪金标准的条款，不会出现在2016年最低薪金通令中。 这表示，对于7月1日以后仍处於试用期的员工，他们的最低薪金标准不被允许减少。
